The gray wolf or grey wolf (Canis lupus), often known simply as the wolf, is the largest extant wild member of the Canidae family. Its body average length is 105-160 cm , height is 80-85 cm and up to 1 m . Usually the weight is 30-50 kg . In case of need wolf gathers speed up to 60 km/h . Wolf is able to do passages up to 80 km in a night. Wolf is well known by its voracity. Being hungry it’s able to eat up to 100 kg of meat. In Belarus the wolf eats hoofed mammals: roe deer, wild boar, red deer , moose; it’s not squeamish about rodent and birds eating, also it eats berries and different fruits.
In Belarus the wolf has always been considered a harmful animal and its hunting game is permitted all year long. Several methods of wolf hunting exists: winter driven hunting game with flags, summer driven hunting game around wolf coach, hunting game with a call, stalking hunting game, hunting game from a hide, wolf hunting with traps.
Winter hunting game with flags. It’s the most effective method of hunting game. It consists on the following: a gamekeeper walk round the place where probably wolves are sleeping and by a number of entrance and exit traces determines a presence of the wolf inside. After this some hunters span a cord with flags around this area.
Red and/or yellow flags are hung up at a height of 25-35 cm from the snow surface in well visible places. It’s considered normal an area of 4-5 km of circumference.
Then inside the area, some 30-40 m from the flags line, in the places of most probable appearance of wolf hunters are placed. And beaters get down to work. It’s not recommended to do a lot of noise. To displace wolf it’s enough to cough a little bit. Animals are not afraid much because of that and will go quite. In this case it easier to hit a wolf.
